spring break 2002

3/31/02 diamond head "crater", oahu. got some fresh air and wriggled limbs abit after the long flight from lax to honolulu. after dinner and walk around waikiki, we drove to a windy lookout at makapuu point hoping to catch some sleep. that wasn't such a great idea after all...

4/1/02 lahaina, maui. flew into maui that morning and checked into bambula inn. thats myself, mahi-mahi(?) and america II sailboat. saw lotsa whales throwing their weight around (yeah, literally) during the sail

4/1/02 honolua bay, maui. a bunch of crazy surfers climbed down the cliffs to ride those waves, which were breaking over a minefield of shallow rocks and coral.. then they were floating in the sea watching the sunset with us. checkout the plume rising off the top of the wave!

4/2/02 haleakala volcano, maui. pretty sunrise. usually more spectacular than this, they say. wind and fog high up there (10,000 feet) was brutal.. after sunrise, we biked downhill back to the shop at the base of the volcano

4/2/02 bamboo forest, maui. along the hana scenic drive. crawled though a broken fence into this bamboo forest, trail led us to this little pretty waterfall..

4/2/02 kipahulu, east maui. awed by the force and beauty of nature. halfway through the scenic drive, and glad to have seen the last of pretty waterfalls...

4/4/02 kona, big island. hula dance lesson at island breeze luau.. hmm i wasn't expecting this kind of demographic (look again). felt a little wierd being there, but hey - it's hawaii, gotta checkout what luau's all about!

4/5/02 volcanoes national park, big island. steam and sulphur banks were pretty intruiging at first, but crater-pit-lava-wasteland overdose was the order of the day. silly me actually expected to see gooey red hot violent hissing exploding lava...

4/6/02 waipo valley, big island. sweet views of northern big island on the flight back to honolulu.

4/7/02 hawaiiana hotel, waikiki, oahu. birthday girl ann marie resolved to master the hula. good for her, the annual merrie monarch hula competition was on tv all weekend..
